How to Use Your Holidays to Maximise Your ATAR and Study Potential

The holidays are a precious time—a chance to unwind, recharge, and refocus before the next term begins. When the holidays finally roll around, it's easy to want to switch off completely—and you should take a break. After all, rest is vital for mental clarity, emotional wellbeing and long-term motivation. But if you're aiming high for your ATAR, it's worth rethinking how you spend this time.

Holidays are a golden opportunity to refocus, recharge, and strategically get ahead. While others might be relaxing without purpose, you can use this time to better yourself—not just academically, but personally too. The key? Balance. Prioritise rest, hobbies, and social time, but don’t forget that the ATAR is a ranking—every bit of smart preparation gives you a competitive edge over other students. Here's how to make the most of your break.

1. Build Your Organisation Skills

During the term, your schedule is mostly dictated for you—school hours, deadlines, homework. But the holidays are a blank slate, with you yourself controlling what you’ll be doing every day. That freedom can be refreshing, but also a trap if you're not careful.

This is the perfect time to develop real-world organisational skills. At university (and in adult life), no one’s telling you what to do—you need to manage your own time. Start now. Create a flexible but structured routine, balancing study, hobbies, rest, and social time.

Do:

✅Make a daily schedule and try to stick to it

✅Include time for activities you enjoy (music, sport, reading etc.)

✅Prioritise proper rest and sleep

✅Be disciplined—start even when it’s hard

Don’t:

❌Completely ditch structure and sleep all day

❌Cram your days with only study

❌Ignore hobbies, friends or time outdoors

❌Overcommit and burn yourself out

2. Study Consistently—But Don’t Overdo It

With no assignments or classes getting in the way, you can work at your own pace, building a solid foundation for what's to come. But this doesn’t mean cramming everything in advance. Holidays are not the time to memorise every textbook page or speed through the entire next term’s syllabus. Instead, they’re a time to study smarter—not harder. The goal is to familiarise yourself with concepts you’re going to learn so they’ll feel easier and less stressful when you meet them properly in class.

Do:

✅Study a little bit each day, even 15-30 minutes

✅Focus on understanding big-picture ideas, not the tiny details

✅Review past topics you're shaky on

✅Create a relaxed, no-pressure study environment

Don’t:

❌Try to rush ahead and learn everything

❌Focus too much on detail and forget the big concepts, or the why

❌Spend every day studying without breaks

❌Ignore your mental health or personal interests

3. Invest in Yourself Beyond Academics

ATAR is important—but it’s not everything. The holidays are also the perfect time to grow in other areas of life that school might push aside.

Explore interests you’ve always been curious about. Now is the time to reflect: was there something you wanted to learn but didn’t have time for during the term? Develop a skill that’ll serve you for years, like learning an instrument, picking up a new sport, or starting a personal project. Even learning about the stock market, cooking, coding or volunteering can all shape you into a well-rounded, capable person. These experiences matter just as much—and will even help with motivation and resilience in Year 12.

Do:

✅Reconnect with hobbies you love

✅Try something new—learn, explore, create

✅Think long-term: career, university, adulthood

✅Use the freedom to grow as a person

Don’t:

❌Force yourself to do things you find meaningless

❌Let study take over your entire break

❌Waste the entire holiday in passive downtime

❌Ignore the bigger picture of life after high school

Final Thoughts

The holidays are a well-earned break, but also an opportunity. While your classmates are switching off, you can be switching on—in a sustainable, smart, and balanced way. By staying organised, studying consistently (but not obsessively), and investing in yourself outside of the classroom, you’ll set yourself up for success not just in Term 1, but for the rest of your ATAR journey.

Use this time wisely, and you’ll come back refreshed, ahead of the curve, and more confident than ever.
